Celebrating 50 Years of Golf, Fun, & Family

1954: Alfred and Jean Welch purchased the first 100 acres and continued to farm the land while operating T. Welch & Son Limited, their roofing business.

Tom Welch his siblings Scott and Marilyn grew up in the house that is now our clubhouse.

Early 1970s: A friend suggested the property, with its streams, trees and 400‑year‑old oak, would make a great golf course. The idea became Alfred’s dream, and he and Tom closed the roofing business and began construction.

1976: Metcalfe Golf opened as 9‑hole course.

Late 1970s: Construction continued and the course expanded to 13 holes.Jean became the main cook, serving homemade doughnuts and Metcalfe’s famous sandwiches.

Early–mid 1980s: An additional 27 acres were purchased and the course expanded to 18 holes.Alfred and Tom led ongoing improvements to the course.

1996: Alfred passed away in a car accident.Tom’s wife Gloria left the Bank of Montreal and joined the business as secretary‑treasurer.

1989: Rob Howell was hired to work in the back shop and was promoted to Golf Shop Manager in 1997 after completing university and a Golf Management program.

2000: Rob became General Manager, the club hired its first chef, Vince Viola, and Richard Boyd started at Hickories.We acquired 100 acres with plans to expand to 27 holes.

2001: Jean Welch passed away.

2003: Gord Baird was hired as Superintendent.

August 9, 2004: After three years of hard work, the new 9 holes opened and Metcalfe now had a 9 & 18 hole course.

2002: The Charity Classic in support of the Osgoode Care Centre was launched.

2006–2008: Major renovations were completed on the original 18 holes.

2008: Our Family Day Tournament in support of Make a Wish was Launched.

2010s: Ongoing upgrades, including paving the parking lot and renovating the restaurant and patio.

2010s: Wyatt Milne‑Elliott started the decade in the back shop and is currently our Golf Operations Manager.

2012: Tony Skaf was hired as Head Chef and helped continue Hickories growth.

2014: Rob Howell became a partner.

2020: During Covid we focused on safety and efficient processes; outdoor check‑in and customer accounts remain today.

2021: Liam Parsons rejoined the team becoming Head Chef in 2022.

2022: Cole Campbell was hired as Superintendent and has led major irrigation improvements and bunker upgrades.

2023: For the 1st time we hired a Professional Instructor, Nick Surch

2024: The most recent addition to our Management Team, Keanu Heins was hired as Event Coordinator & F&B Supervisor.

2026: Metcalfe Golf Club is happy to be celebrating 50 years of golf, fun, and family.
